I can give some advice to Japanese people who struggle with speaking English. Before coming to Japan I had no idea about the details of Japanese language. Now I can easily understand the difficulties for Japanese people in speaking English. I had an experience to talk with Japanese students in our university who wanted to study English. They had pronunciation problems. We took some simple words in English which were very difficult to pronounce for student. Especially combination with some letters like L, X, etc. We were practicing a lot with these words, it was hard but finally we got a result that they did it and could pronounce all words correctly. I suggest to increase skills of vocabulary but at the same time practice words combinations. Method of practice, as for me, is to read loud and try to hear yourself, or record your voice and try listen your pronunciation. But there is possible another problem. Problem is how to hear correct pronunciation of the words, in this case if they do not have teacher with them, they should listen dialog, short and simple listening comprehensions.
I suggest use BBC or CNN channels or listening examples from there. Even if you do not understand the meaning of some words, it will be better to continue listening, but after that use the dictionary and try to check out the words. After that one more time listen same thing. There are a lot of methods, each student should choose the best method, which will be most productive for him. To conclude, I would like to take the word of one of the greats women. Learn everything you can, anytime you can, from anyone you can; there will always come a time when you will be grateful you did.
